FREE, HOT, BUTTERED, CORN-ON-THE-COB
Free, hot, buttered, Corn-on-the-Cob is a 52nd year tradition at the Morden Corn and Apple Festival. In the early years we grew the specialty corn ourselves but the demand soon outstripped our ability to produce it. Later the local Kinsmen and Lions Clubs took over the task until even they were unable to keep up.
Now the special, sweet brand of corn is grown locally by Marcus Wiebe, Zach Wiebe and Kevin Dalke in specially timed plots to ensure plenty of perfect corn at festival time, no matter what kind of growing season we have had.
Festival volunteers husk the corn on the street for all to see, using a husker that was donated by Morden Fine Foods when they closed in the early 80’s. This machinery has been lovingly maintained by John Neufeld, but in 2016 he passed his reins to his protege. One year, new rollers were needed but are no longer being manufactured so John made new ones himself.
The husked corn is then cooked in water that is steam heated by an antique steam engine provided and operated by licensed volunteers from the Pembina Thresherman’s Museum.

FREE, ICE COLD APPLE JUICE
The fresh apple juice served at the Morden Corn and Apple Festival is representative of the many varieties of apple trees developed at the Agriculture Canada, Morden Research Station. Many of the varieties of apple trees grown in Canada today were developed right here in Morden.
In 2004 Morden was honoured when a new variety of apple tree was developed and named for the Corn and Apple Festival. The fruit of the “Morden Festival” ripens in late summer, a week earlier than the ‘Goodland’ so that it is ready for the Corn and Apple Festival. The apples are sweeter than the ‘Goodland’ and are approximately the same size.
